Pet Vaccinations in Oakland, TN
Vaccines are one of the most effective ways to protect your pet from serious, preventable diseases. At Main Street Animal Clinic. , we build vaccination schedules around your individual pet—taking their age, species, health history, and lifestyle into account to address their needs.
Core & Lifestyle Vaccines for Dogs and Cats
We offer both core and lifestyle (non-core) vaccines for dogs and cats as part of regular wellness exams. Core vaccines are recommended for all pets regardless of lifestyle. Lifestyle vaccines are selected based on your pet’s specific risk factors.
Core dog vaccines typically include:
- Rabies
- DHPPV
- Bordetella (kennel cough)
Core cat vaccines typically include:
- Rabies
- FVRCP
- Leukemia
Lifestyle vaccines we may recommend, depending on your pet’s situation, include leptospirosis, lyme, and canine influenza for dogs, and feline leukemia aids test for cats. If your dog visits boarding facilities and dog parks or uses our grooming services, or if your cat spends time outdoors, these vaccines may be worth discussing at your next visit.
Vaccination Schedules for Puppies, Kittens, and Adult Pets
Puppies and kittens need a series of vaccines starting as early as six to eight weeks of age, with boosters given every few weeks until the initial series is complete. This early series helps build immunity during the window when maternal antibodies are wearing off.
Adult pets typically receive boosters on an annual or triennial schedule, depending on the vaccine. We track your pet’s vaccination history and send reminders when boosters are due—so you don’t have to keep track on your own.
Pet Vaccine FAQs
Which vaccines does my dog or cat actually need?
Every pet is different, so we review your pet’s age, health status, and lifestyle before making recommendations. Rabies vaccination is required by law in Tennessee for both dogs and cats. Beyond that, we’ll walk you through which vaccines make sense for your pet specifically.
Are vaccines safe for my pet?
Vaccines are considered safe for most pets and are a standard part of preventive care. Mild reactions such as temporary soreness or low energy can occur after vaccination in some animals. Serious reactions are uncommon, but our team will discuss what to watch for after your visit.
My pet stays indoors—do they still need vaccines?
Core vaccines, including rabies, are still recommended for indoor-only pets. Rabies is required by Tennessee law regardless of lifestyle, and some diseases can be introduced into the home through clothing, shoes, or other animals. We’ll help you decide which additional vaccines are appropriate based on your pet’s situation.
How do I know when my pet's vaccines are due?
We keep records of every vaccine administered at our clinic and can remind you when boosters are coming up. The PetDesk app also makes it easy to track your pet’s health history and upcoming appointments in one place.
Do you vaccinate rabbits?
Rabbits in the United States are not currently vaccinated against the diseases that rabbit vaccines address in other countries, as those vaccines aren’t licensed here. If you have questions about rabbit preventive care, we’re happy to discuss what we recommend at your rabbit’s wellness visit.
