What We Treat at Urgent Care Visits

Urgent care covers a wide range of conditions that need same-day attention but don’t require an emergency facility. Common reasons pet owners call us include:

Gastrointestinal issues
Vomiting or diarrhea that has been going on for more than a day, contains blood, or is accompanied by lethargy or loss of appetite warrants a same-day evaluation. These symptoms can indicate anything from dietary indiscretion to intestinal obstruction—lab testing and X-rays help us narrow down the cause quickly.

Wounds and lacerations
Cuts, puncture wounds, and lacerations that are deep, won’t stop bleeding, or show signs of infection need prompt attention. Depending on the wound, treatment may involve cleaning and closure, pain management, or antibiotics. In some cases, soft tissue surgical repair is the appropriate approach.

Lameness and injuries
Sudden limping, inability to bear weight, or swelling around a limb following trauma should be evaluated the same day. We’ll perform a physical exam and take digital X-rays to assess for fractures, joint injury, or soft tissue damage. Cases requiring surgical repair—such as fractures or torn ligaments—may be addressed here or referred to a specialist, depending on complexity. See our Pet Orthopedic Surgery page for more on what we treat in-house.

Eye and ear concerns
Sudden eye redness, squinting, discharge, or swelling can indicate corneal injury, infection, or glaucoma—conditions that can worsen quickly without treatment. Similarly, severe head shaking, ear odor, or visible discharge may signal an infection that needs prompt care.

Suspected toxin ingestion
If your pet has ingested something potentially toxic—household chemicals, certain plants, medications, or foods like xylitol or grapes—call us immediately. Time is a significant factor in toxin cases. If we’re not available, contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline, or go directly to an emergency clinic.

Urinary concerns
Straining to urinate, crying out while urinating, or producing little to no urine—particularly in male cats—can indicate a urinary blockage, which is a medical emergency. Call us or go directly to an emergency clinic if your male cat is straining without producing urine.

Respiratory symptoms
Labored breathing, open-mouth breathing in cats, persistent coughing, or unusual gum color (pale, blue, or white) are signs that require immediate evaluation. These symptoms may indicate heart disease, fluid in the chest, or airway obstruction. If your pet is struggling to breathe, go to an emergency clinic without delay.

Sudden lethargy or collapse
A pet that is suddenly unresponsive, extremely weak, or collapses should be seen immediately. These symptoms can indicate a range of serious conditions, including internal bleeding, cardiac events, or severe infection.

What Happens During an Urgent Care Visit

When you arrive, we’ll triage your pet and prioritize based on the severity of their condition. We have in-house diagnostics, including blood work, urinalysis, digital X-rays, and ultrasound, available to support rapid assessment. This means we can often identify the problem and begin treatment during the same visit rather than waiting for outside lab results.

After evaluation, we’ll walk you through our findings and discuss treatment options clearly. If your pet’s condition requires care beyond what we can provide in-house, we’ll refer you to the appropriate facility and help facilitate that transition.

When to Go Directly to an Emergency Clinic

Some situations require a 24-hour emergency facility rather than urgent care. Go directly to an emergency clinic—without calling us first—if your pet is experiencing any of the following:

  • Difficulty breathing or blue/white gums
  • Suspected internal bleeding or severe trauma
  • Seizures lasting more than two to three minutes or multiple seizures in quick succession
  • Loss of consciousness or inability to be roused
  • Suspected spinal injury with sudden paralysis
  • Male cat straining to urinate with no output
  • Suspected poisoning with rapidly worsening symptoms

Our emergency referral partners are available around the clock:

  • Emergency Referral Hospital: (901) 323-4563
  • Memphis Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Center: (901) 624-9002

Pet Urgent Care FAQs

Do I need an appointment for urgent care?
Call us first whenever possible—(901) 235-7127. Calling ahead allows us to prepare for your arrival and confirm we have availability. Walk-ins are accepted based on capacity, but a quick call helps us serve you faster.
What if I'm a new client and my pet needs urgent care?
Call us. We do our best to accommodate new clients with urgent needs during business hours. Have your pet’s previous veterinary records available if possible, though we won’t delay care while waiting for records.
Can you treat my pet after hours?

We’re not able to provide after-hours care. For evening, overnight, or weekend emergencies outside our Saturday hours, please contact our emergency referral partners listed above or on our Emergency Referrals page.

What diagnostics can you run during an urgent care visit?

We have in-house blood work and urinalysis, digital X-rays, and ultrasound available. Results from in-house tests are typically available within 15 to 30 minutes, which helps us make faster treatment decisions.

My pet seems better now—should I still call?
If your pet showed concerning symptoms that have since resolved, it’s still worth calling us. Some conditions improve temporarily before worsening, and a same-day evaluation can help rule out something more serious. When in doubt, call.
