Spaying and Neutering for Dogs, Cats, and Rabbits

We perform spay and neuter procedures for dogs, cats, and rabbits at our Oakland, TN clinic, as a key part of our preventative care. Rabbit spays and neuters are a specialty we’re proud to offer.

If you have a rabbit and are looking for a veterinarian experienced in rabbit care, give us a call to discuss your options.

Health Benefits of Spaying and Neutering

Spaying and neutering can offer meaningful long-term health benefits for many pets, though the right timing and approach vary by species, breed, and size.

For female dogs and cats, spaying removes the risk of uterine infections (pyometra) and can reduce the likelihood of mammary tumors, particularly when performed before the first heat cycle.

For male dogs and cats, neutering eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and may reduce the risk of certain prostate conditions.

For rabbits, spaying female rabbits is strongly recommended—uterine cancer is common in unspayed females and can develop as early as two to three years of age. Neutering male rabbits can reduce territorial and hormonal behaviors.

When Should You Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

Timing recommendations have evolved in recent years, particularly for dogs. General guidelines have traditionally suggested spaying or neutering between six months of age, but current research suggests that for some larger breeds, waiting until skeletal maturity may be beneficial.

We review your pet’s breed, size, and health history before making a timing recommendation. There’s no single right answer for every pet, and we’d rather have that conversation with you than give you a number that may not apply to your animal.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery

Just as we do with all our procedures, including our specialized soft tissue surgeries and orthopedic surgeries, we approach spaying and neutering with the utmost precision and focus on your pet’s recovery.

Before the procedure: We’ll perform a pre-surgical examination and may recommend bloodwork to confirm your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia. We’ll provide fasting instructions and answer any questions you have before the day of surgery.

During the procedure: Spay and neuter procedures are performed under general anesthesia. Our team monitors your pet’s vital signs throughout, and pain management is part of our standard surgical protocol.

After the procedure: Most pets go home the same day. We’ll send you home with clear aftercare instructions, including activity restrictions and incision monitoring guidelines. We’re available to answer questions during recovery.

Spay & Neuter FAQs

Is spaying or neutering safe for my pet?
Spay and neuter procedures are among the most routinely performed surgeries in veterinary medicine. As with any procedure involving anesthesia, there are risks, and we take steps to minimize them through pre-surgical screening and careful monitoring. Our team will discuss any specific concerns with you before scheduling.
Will spaying or neutering change my pet's personality?
These procedures can reduce hormone-driven behaviors such as roaming, mounting, and urine marking in some pets. They don’t change a pet’s core personality or temperament. Many pet owners find their animals are calmer and easier to manage after the procedure.
How long is the recovery?
Most dogs and cats recover within 10 to 14 days. Rabbits typically recover similarly, though rabbit surgery requires close monitoring in the first 24 to 48 hours. We’ll give you specific guidance based on your pet’s procedure and send you home with written aftercare instructions.
My pet is older—can they still be spayed or neutered?
Age alone doesn’t disqualify a pet from the procedure, but older animals do carry a slightly higher anesthetic risk. We assess each patient individually and may recommend pre-surgical bloodwork to evaluate organ function before proceeding.
Do you spay and neuter rabbits?
Yes. We perform rabbit spays and neuters and are experienced in the specific considerations that rabbit surgery requires. If you have questions about preparing your rabbit for surgery, we’re happy to walk you through the process.
